Variety: CHARDONNEY. The Chardonnay grape (Chardonnay) is a technical variety from which wine of the same name is made. The berries have a buttery-lemon aroma. This variety was bred in France during the Middle Ages. Since ancient times Chardonnay has been grown in the Champagne and Burgundy provinces. In addition, the variety is cultivated in other countries, for example in the USA and Germany.
Wine made from Chardonnay grapes can be aged for quite a long time, but specialists recommend not exceeding 30 years. Winemakers consider this variety ideal for producing alcoholic beverages, because the berries are distinguished by resistance to various influences. That is why professionals say: it is impossible to make a bad drink from Chardonnay.
The cluster of this white grape variety is of medium size — up to 13 cm in length, about 10 cm in width. Cylindrical in shape, weight — no more than 100 g. Berries are oval, up to 16 mm in diameter. Color — yellow or green.
This variety is one of the most popular and valuable in the world. Today Chardonnay is grown in almost all corners of the planet. At the same time it feels good only in warm regions, since it does not tolerate severe frosts well (temperature should not fall below –20 °C), otherwise the bush may die. Therefore many gardeners advise covering the plants during frosts.
Chardonnay grapes are resistant to diseases such as downy mildew and powdery mildew. But if the summer is cold and wet, the fruits may rot or crack. Also the variety is unpretentious to planting conditions — it can grow on almost any soil.
