The principle of capillary rise of liquid works here. Modern pots for growing orchids have a wick self-watering system. This means that the inner pot is equipped with a special wick, through which the plant receives moisture from the bottom of the container. There is contact of the wick, made of water-permeable material, with perlite or another hygroscopic medium. One end of the cord is immersed in the lower container, which contains water or nutrient solution, and the other end is brought into the lower layer of the substrate.Surface tension forces that arise as a result of the interaction of solid and liquid substances provide capillary suction of the wick. Thus, the conductivity of the liquid becomes effective. Water is supplied in time so that the plant does not dry out, and at the same time there is no waterlogging. In addition, the presence of an outer pot eliminates the need to use a saucer.The water level viewing window will timely indicate that the plant needs more moisture. Usually orchids have enough self-watering for up to two weeks.There are drainage holes in the inner pot into which excess water seeps. Such a design prevents root rot and the appearance of fungus, as well as soil acidification.Smart orchid pots with self-watering are designed to create comfortable conditions when growing phalaenopsis. The features of the design allow you to create an optimal microclimate for these plants that are demanding in terms of maintenance conditions:the shape of the pot, the bottom of which has a rise and drainage channels, which does not allow the roots to be overmoistened and provides quality aeration;the plastic from which the pot is made is characterized by low thermal conductivity, which helps maintain the required temperature.By regulating the feeding and water supply regime, florists can purposefully influence the development of the orchid: accelerate or slow down growth and flowering, creating conditions for the healthy growth of the foliage and roots.
