Selection considerations
To make a successful purchase of a watercraft, it is important to consider the following selection criteria:
- Length and capacity – depend on how many adults will be on the boat at the same time. The length of a single-person boat by standards ranges from 190 to 320 cm, while for 6 people you should choose a vessel 400 to 430 cm long.
- Engine power and speed – if you are considering motorboats capable of planing, you need an engine with at least 5 hp. That power is enough to plane with one person. For 2–3 people a 9.8 hp engine is suitable. For 3–6 adults, a 15 hp engine is appropriate.
- Hull stiffness: soft, inflatable, hard-flat hull, rigid hull with inflatable keel, low-pressure inflatable hull with keel.
- Seating – movable or fixed.
- Availability of fittings for a specific boat model – bow and cockpit canopies, rod holders, fishfinders, etc.
- Intended operating environment.
- Tube diameter.
- Quality of reinforcement.
- Cockpit width.
- Boat weight.
- Hull design.
- Fabric color.
- Type of transom – rigid or hanging.
- Additional equipment package – skipper handle, drain valve, anchor eye, lifelines, bag, fuel tank securing ring, various fittings.
