Description:

The difference of this pump from water pumps of later releases is the use of two different bearings, seals and a composite old-type seal (fiber) installed in the impeller, and sealing occurs as a result of friction of the sealing graphite or textolite washer against the sliding bushing of the water pump housing. The pump shaft is made of steel, has a flat to prevent the impeller from turning and a thread to secure the impeller with a bolt. This design allows repairing the pump with the minimum necessary tools, but the abundance of moving parts makes it less durable than pumps of later designs. When repairing such a water pump, it is necessary to carefully inspect the sliding bushing (the mating part of the seal) for signs of wear. If there are chips, scratches or considerable wear, the bushing must be replaced, otherwise leakage will occur even after replacing the seal and bearings.

To speed up the run-in of the graphite sealing washer, it should be lubricated with colloidal graphite grease. This will eliminate leakage from the drain hole until the sealing sliding pair graphite–steel is fully mated. The contact area of the housing support bushing to the sealing washer should be at least 85% with a continuous annular imprint 2 mm wide.

Impeller balancing should be checked only if it is cast iron. Plastic impellers do not require balancing. When installing the impeller, attention should be paid to the impeller's protrusion beyond the end of the pump housing. It must not protrude more than 0.4 mm, nor sink more than 1 mm into the housing. This will ensure adequate sealing and not break the water pump seal.

Water pump bearings are open or semi-closed. Before installation they must be cleaned of contaminants and lubricated with LITOL-24 or CIATIM-221F. Place 35–40 g of grease into the bearing cavity.
