Expanded clay is a lightweight material with a porous texture produced by firing clay or clay shale. It is an environmentally friendly natural material with a thermal conductivity coefficient in the range of 0.12–0.15 W/m·K.

To obtain expanded clay, clay or sand-clay rocks are used. The raw material is fired at temperatures of 1000–1300 degrees. As a result of this process it becomes resistant to chemical exposure, mold and fungal growth. Expanded clay is considered fairly durable and typically has an oval shape.

Here are some properties of expanded clay:

1. Strength – depends on the type of expanded clay. For example, expanded clay gravel can have strength up to 2.5 MPa, while crushed stone may reach 1.6 MPa at the same density.
2. Thermal conductivity – this parameter depends on the material's density. The higher the density, the lower the thermal insulation properties.
3. Water absorption. The water absorption coefficient is 14–20% and is characteristic only for fractions with a fired crust that prevents moisture from entering inside.
4. Sound insulation. This characteristic becomes noticeable when laying a layer of material at least 10 cm thick.
5. Frost resistance. Fired clay does not deteriorate at low temperatures or from water entering the pores.

Aerated concrete is a type of porous concrete used in construction. This man-made stone has approximately spherical, closed pores 1–3 mm in diameter evenly distributed throughout its volume. Aerated concrete is formed by mixing crushed quartz sand and lime with a small amount of cement and water. The entire mass matures in a steam atmosphere in an autoclave.

Aerated concrete blocks made from this material have a high internal void ratio. The total volume of air cells inside a single block can reach 85% of its overall volume. Aerated concrete is easy to work with because it can be sawn, drilled and planed with ordinary steel tools. It is also non-combustible and has lower natural radioactivity compared to conventional concrete.

This material is used in residential, commercial and industrial construction. The main consumption is for building blocks for walls and partitions, as well as reinforced products such as lintels and floor slabs.
