Plum IMPERIAL Synonyms: Imperial Epinez. Pollinators: Reine Claude Altana, Stanley, Bluefre.Origin/history: the columnar plum variety Imperial was bred by French breeders in 1870. The plum is a beloved flower in China. The five petals of the plum symbolize: peace, longevity, joy, prosperity and luck. Ukrainian gardeners have already had time to duly appreciate this compact and very productive type of plum tree. The variety is considered the most delicacy-like of the columnar plums.Description of the variety: a small tree on Pumisel ect rootstock (begins to bear fruit already in the second year after planting), has a columnar shape in the form of a narrow pyramid with shortened fruiting formations that densely cover the entire main trunk of the tree. Despite the delicate appearance of this plant, the columnar plum Imperial is capable of producing quite large and abundant harvests; its wood is very strong. The biggest advantages when planting this variety are the abundance of fruiting and the compactness of the tree itself. In addition, thanks to the compactness of the tree, both the care process and the harvest collection are much easier.Form: the tree has a single trunk, with practically undeveloped lateral branching. The crown consists of one-year fruiting spurs and ringlets, which makes it very compact and small-sized; lateral branches do form, but in very small numbers.Size: the tree height reaches about 2 meters.Growth rate/vigor: trees grow vigorously in youth, moderately during the fruiting period.Leaves: medium-sized, dark green and glossy, oval, boat-shaped. Edges are doubly serrated, the base rounded with an acute tip.Flowers: medium-sized, white, saucer-shaped. The variety is self-incompatible, so it is better to plant pollinator trees nearby. Blooming time: early flowering - first ten days of May, very abundant.Fruits: extraordinarily tasty and large (weighing 55 g) plums - the greatest advantage of the Imperial variety. Fruits are round in shape, pink-purple in color, sometimes with a darker shade. The flesh is golden-yellow in color, very tender in texture, contains a large amount of juice. Fruits are harvested in mid-August. This variety has rightly received the highest rating from tasters for the taste quality of its fruits.Light exposure/insolation preference: the columnar plum variety Imperial prefers sunny places, but can grow in shade. Does not suffer from strong winds and drought.
