Hydrangea 'Bodensee' (Hydrangea macrophylla 'Bodensee', mophead). Bodensee is a beautiful cultivar of bigleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla). It was bred in New Zealand. A nice plant with a characteristic flowering habit. Hydrangea 'Bodensee' can be colored bright pink (if the plant is grown in more alkaline soils) or blue (when grown in acidic soil) by adjusting the soil pH. The hydrangea blooms easily and has a stable structure. It will produce masses of flowers. Unlike other two-colored hydrangea cultivars, this cultivar has a vigorous root system. It is characterized by good winter hardiness and successfully thrives in windy zones. The bigleaf hydrangea is a large shrub that becomes covered with beautiful inflorescences already in early summer. The height and width of the plant are about 120 cm. The bush is compact. The umbrella-shaped inflorescences consist of showy sterile flowers surrounded by sepals. The inflorescences are large, spherical in shape. The sepals have smooth edges. The leaves are relatively thick and distinct, slightly glossy, and often heart-shaped. Their margins are toothed. They are approximately 10–12 cm long and up to 8–15 cm wide, but in some cases they can grow even larger. The leaves are a deep green color. They have an attractive appearance throughout the season. Leaf stalks (petioles) are short, causing the leaves to sit close to the main stems in most cases. Stems often have tiny black or red stripes or specks. They are erect and point upward. Mophead and lacecap hydrangeas have the same leaf shapes. The fruits are not decorative. Flowering period: June–August. The hydrangea grows quickly, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for approximately 20 years. It is ideal as a flowering plant in the garden, on a balcony, or on a terrace. The 'Bodensee' hydrangea grows in humus-rich fertile soil with good drainage. It performs well in both sunny spots and partial shade. The optimal option is bright sun in the morning and shading during the day. It prefers slightly acidic soil; heavy clay soils with poor drainage should be avoided. Ideal as a flowering plant in the garden, on a balcony, or on a terrace. It requires a lot of space in the flowerbed (more than 1.2 m). Very moisture-loving. Requires a little winter protection. If hydrangea flowers are pink instead of blue, acidify the soil with aluminum sulfate. But avoid overdosing, as this substance is harmful to the roots. Regarding pruning, in spring simply thin out old stems and remove spent inflorescences. Do you like masses of bright flowers? Then choose the hydrangea 'Bodensee'.
