Variety Cotton Candy. A beautiful bright-pink hybrid hydrangea with a greenish center bred in the USA. Breeder Tim Wood. Obtained by crossing bigleaf and serrated hydrangeas. Hydrangea macrophylla Cotton Candy forms a medium-sized shrub reaching up to 80 cm in height and about 100 cm in width. Crown rounded, symmetrical, dense. Shoots strong, branched. Leaves toothed, glossy, dark green, red in autumn. Flowering from July to September on last year’s and current year’s shoots. Inflorescences are lacecap umbrellas, large, asymmetrical, 14–20 cm in diameter. Sterile flowers semi-double, pink-red, green-yellow in the center, LaceCap type. Sepal coloration depends on soil composition and pH. To maintain decorative appearance, faded inflorescences should be removed, and branches pruned in early spring. Prefers sunny or partially shaded locations, grows well in light, fertile, moist, well-drained soils. Hardy to -24°C. To prevent flower buds from freezing, requires winter protection similar to roses. Suitable for cultivation in small and large gardens, for group or solitary plantings, and for containers on balconies and terraces. This variety was awarded a gold medal at Plantarium 2012, Netherlands.
